David Bowie — Studio Brief 02 — OUGD505

David Bowie has been a huge influencer of gender transgression for decades.

The backhanded lipstick smear became such a large statement within blurring the lines of gender binary that it has been used across many different cultures and performance mediums.

This proving that this is not a new concept, however it has become a much more popular subject in the last couple of years. Meaning the perfect time to clarify and promote the correct meaning is now, creating a universal 'guide' on what it is and what it means for the future of humanity, making is a perfect response for this studio brief in particular.

Jonathan Barnbrook, a recent visiter to the university, spoke about the artwork he designed for David Bowie's 22nd studio album; Heathen.

Influenced by the anti-religious meaning, with satanist connotations its style is not aimed at either sex.

Using these techniques within the publication is a must. However the zine should not be perceived of as for either male or female, so in theory, any colour or technique can be used as the reader must be in an ambiguous mindset to fully understand the concept of gender transgression within modern culture.
