Documenting just a few of these concepts will help gauge what is considered a more modern take on the banknote and inform my own decisions within the design of a Martian currency.
Norwegian Redesign
This genuine redesign of the Norwegian krone is a great example of how pattern can be utilised to create an abstract, yet effective piece of design. Although this is what was rejected by the Nordic Bank in favour for a more traditional approach however the 'pixelated' style of the notes reflect the ever changing digital world we live in perfectly.
Swedish Redesign
This proposed Swedish redesign is said to prove that 'The oblong country [is] giving tradition a run for its money'. Again, like Norway, Sweden uses the Krone just like the other Nordic countries. It seems that there is a correlation between the Krone and wanting to think forward rather than focus on tradition and what has already been done. This solution proposes Sweden's 'innovative, forward-looking spirit.' However, unfortunately never made it to the press.
Hungarian Banknote Concept
This amazing example of copperplate etching uses a traditional technique to introduce modern Sans Serif typefaces into circulation. The proposed solution uses UV inks to represent the animals skeleton then a blacklight is shined over them. This is a really great way to add security features which would make the banknote extremely hard to forge.
US Dollar Concept
Probably the most apt redesign out of all of the above, the US dollar redesign that celebrates scientific achievement rather than presidents. The two colour designs wold look great screen printed and could influence my own designs for the Martian currency. However, restricting myself to using only Mars as a visual influencer for the designs means thinking more outside of the box than using concepts similar to this.
