To help me understand what makes a good logo great, I have gathered what I think are the most effective logo's of all time.
1. Paul Rand:
Probably the undisputed champion of logo design. Rand had created a huge portfolio of some of the largest corporations in the world that are still knocking around today after his death back in 1996
2. Massimo Vignelli:
Hate him or love him, there is no denying the genius that is Vignelli. Some say he was a dictator of what can be deemed as 'good' design, however, if it weren't for the ultra-modernist values of Vignelli, the uprising of post-modernism wouldn't have been the same.
3. Lance Wyman:
Wyman is mostly known for his legendary branding for the Mexico 68 olympics. By using lines and clear type choices, he was able to produce some of the most effective logos of his generation.
4. Tom Geismar:
Another well known designer. The NBC logo below is the main reason I chose to include him in my list, I often struggle with adding cool into my designs, and yo would expect a logo that uses multiple colours to not be very effective, yet somehow, he has accomplished a perfect balance between multiple colours for a single identity.
5. Alan Fletcher:
With a reputation of being regarded as one of the best graphic designers of his generation, it;s safe to say Fletcher was a masterclass in logo design. His simplistic approach in stripping to a minimum and creating word mark that somehow works as an image rather than just type.
6. Robert Brownjohn:
'Visual puns' is one way to describe the work of Brownjohn. By combining modernist style with post modern values, he had created the ultimate basis that allows you to 'watch type move'.
