Throughout this
brief, I found myself more motivated than I usually would, I think the quantity
of work reflects this statement. This is because of the short amount of time we
were given to complete it, it made me realise how quickly things must be
considered and a final piece be generated.
By using the
folding session we had in the early stages of the brief to my benefit, rather
than just disregarding it as something I won't need to complete the final
leaflet, I was able to get a grasp very quickly of what kind of shapes and
sizes I wanted to experiment with, and essentially execute. Blogging played
huge part in this project, from researching existing leaflets to design
considerations, I found it amusing how I was increasingly aware of my own
design process whilst I was writing about it, as normally it would just be an
inclination of automated steps I generally embark upon no matter what the brief
may be.
Overall, this brief was an enjoyable one
for me. I found that being much more prepared and eager, I was able to use my
enthusiasm to produce something I was proud of. Something of which I struggled with
in my level 4 stage of the course.
Feedback played a large part in my layout
choices. By asking around and gathering differed opinions of what would work
best, I was able to use this information to my benefit and produce something
that not only I found to be successful, but something that others helped to
create to such a standard.
My consideration’s with every aspect
throughout the brief were to keep the production costs to a minimum. I wanted
the fold to be semi-complex, yet easy enough to cut out of a simple A3 sheet of
heavy newsprint and require little effort to score/fold. My decision to try and
use a laser printer (something of which was more common sense than anything as
these kind of printers are the most accessible and cheapest to print on within
the university) was somewhat of a flop, the colours were washed and it made it
very difficult to print both sides of the leaflet without it coming out miss-aligned.
So I came to the conclusion that I had to utilize the digital print room and
pay that little bit extra to generate something that is much more worthwhile and
uses toner of an increased quality.
To sum up, I thoroughly enjoyed this project
and found it extremely insightful and made me increasingly aware of my own
design process. However, due to time restrictions, I felt a little bit pressured
to generate the final specimen and this created sloppiness as I found out after
printing, through the faults of my own and not proof reading enough, I spotted
an orphan, having said this, it isn’t the end of the world and this is
something I will build upon in my future to ensure proofing does not become a
weakness within my own process.
